Northern Arizona Interfaith Council develops leaders who drive civic participation across lines of race, class, age, and religion. We organize to advance issues that serve the common good.
Rooted in the interests and values of our member institutions, our current initiatives include:
Leadership Development
NAIC’s primary work is to develop leaders in congregations, schools, and non-profits to help their institutions strengthen and grow, and help them act on the issues that are important to them. We offer ongoing training based on the experience of our own organizer and leaders as well as intensive training offered by West/Southwest IAF.
Housing for All
At the NAIC 2024 Accountability Session with Flagstaff City Council and FUSD Governing Board, we advocated for better landlord-tenant relationships, securing housing protections for immigrants, and advancing affordable housing options for teachers.
Advancing Immigrant Families
Working hand-in-hand with local governments and institutions, we
- Fight for immigrant-friendly housing policies, including mobile home protections
- Improve access to public education by removing cultural and linguistic barriers
- Champion safer, bilingual communities in Sedona through initiatives such as language exchange programs and multi-use pathways.
Empowering Parents, Students and Teachers in Public Education
In collaboration with NAU’s Community and University Public Inquiry program and Flagstaff
Unified School District, we’ve helped:
- Improve language interpretation and translation and increase bilingual staff in schools.
- Support bilingual parents in creating and leading culturally relevant community events meant to address community needs
- Foster leadership development among students, parents, and teachers while celebrating diverse voices in public education.
Voter Engagement for Change
In 2024, we mobilized and organized residents to make their voices heard, registering more than 800 new voters at NAU and increasing participation among underrepresented voters through the leadership of NAIC member Arizona Students’ Association.
Climate Action
Through a collaboration with the City of Flagstaff and the Community Engagement Coalition for Energy Retrofits, NAIC has helped design a federally funded program providing energy retrofits for low-income families.
